How Much Is Enough?
Hi,
Last month, we talked about knowing when a work is "enough" and avoiding the trap of perfectionism. Today, I want to take that thought a step further and talk about when life is enough.
There is a story by Heinrich Böll that has accompanied me for several years now, and I find myself sharing it with my mentees over and over again.
A fisherman returns to shore with a single fish. A businessman approaches him and asks:
“Why don’t you stay out longer and catch more fish?”
The fisherman replies: “This is enough for me and my family.”
The businessman starts explaining:
“If you work harder, you can buy bigger boats, build a company, make more money… and one day you’ll finally be free to enjoy life.”
The fisherman asks: “How long will that take?”
“15 to 20 years,” the businessman replies.
“And then what?”
“Then you can relax. Spend time with your family, sleep in, fish a little, enjoy life…”
The fisherman smiles: “But that’s exactly what I’m already doing.”

This story always serves as a vital gut check for me. How much is enough?
So many people spend their entire lives chasing things they don’t truly need, always waiting for that “someday” when they can finally start living. But the truth is, life doesn't start at a certain bank balance or job title. It is happening right now.
Now is the time to start.
To create.
To travel.
To take risks.
To step outside your comfort zone.
To do something you’ve never done before.
Don't wait for “someday.” Start now.
