Let It Be Enough
Hey,
I’ve noticed something over time, both in my own work and in conversations with other artists.
Many of them get stuck in the same place - not because they’re not good enough, but because they keep trying to perfect something that might already be enough.
Perfection can be a strange thing. You work on something, tweak it, adjust it, come back to it again - always feeling like it’s not quite there yet.
There’s a story I often think about when it comes to that.
A painter is standing in the Louvre, looking at one of his own works hanging on the wall. After a while, he thinks to himself: “It’s not finished. I need to change something.” So he goes home, grabs his brushes and paint, comes back, and tries to continue working on it. Security stops him and asks what he’s doing. He says, “I’m the artist. This is my painting. I just want to perfect it.” And they tell him, “It’s hanging in the Louvre. It is perfect.”
That always stayed with me.
Because at some point, the work leaves you - and what you see as unfinished might already be enough.
Same thing with music.
Bill Withers recorded “Ain’t No Sunshine” and, during the bridge, repeated “I know” over and over not because it was the final idea, but just to fill the space for the demo. He planned to come back and refine it later. It never happened. The song was released like that - and it became a classic.
What was meant to be temporary ended up being exactly what made it special.
That made me rethink a lot. Not everything needs one more tweak. Not everything needs one more version. Sometimes the thing you’re about to “fix” is the part that makes it real.
At some point, you have to let it be what it is - and move on.
What are you still trying to perfect - even though it might already be enough?
Take care and keep moving with intention
